A Blog Column by Sarah Albiston

As a freelance copywriter, a large part of my business is writing for and about the senior living industry. I have worked in this industry for more than 20 years, in advertising, marketing, and sales positions. I have developed a great fondness for the communities and companies I have worked with, and I am grateful for all the knowledge I have acquired.
The most surprising thing I learned every day as a consultant in the senior-living industry is how few people outside the industry have a good understanding of it. To be fair, some seniors today may have unpleasant memories of their parents' “old folks home” or remember stories of unregulated and unpleasant nursing homes. It's easy to see why this may seem like a good subject to put off 'til later.
But what surprised me the most, was how little knowledge adult children of seniors, and professional advisors of seniors know about today's retirement living world. Every day I would meet doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, pastors, etc, and the first question they would always ask me was "Where do we start?" Then they would often ask "What's up with all those acronyms?" I quickly learned that before you could “sell” a community to a senior and to their family and advisors, you had to educate them. Learning the terminology, understanding costs, determining priorities, and forecasting health and financial scenarios is time-consuming. But it is essential.
I'm happy to introduce my new blog column, Good Words on Senior Living. Topic by topic, I'll do my part to inform, demystify, and clarify this ever-changing industry for you and your loved ones.
If you have any specific topics you would like me to cover here, email me at sarahalbiston@goodwordsllc.com and I will do my best to help.
